4 August 2026The Indigenous Sharing and Learning Centre (ISLC) at Laurentian University (LU) was based off of a teaching lodge. It also has a round room inspired by wigwam construction. It is a place that shares universal and ancient information to reconnect people to the Earth and Nature. In 2005, Laurentian University invested in the idea of a ‘home away from home’ for all Indigenous students. It provided an opportunity to create a space where Indigenous people can showcase their culture, and non-Indigenous students can learn from others. The Centre is home to 1,100 Indigenous students and 25 Indigenous faculty at LU. Through an intensive study of the campus, a round room for teachings was identified as a need by the Indigenous students and community, and supported by Laurentian University’s Native Education Council.
