The Water Garden Pavilion is the central building to the overall Prince Arthur’s Landing Masterplan, which looks to revitalize the Thunder Bay waterfront through its networks of natural and built terrain, looking to embody the spirit, materiality, and culture of Canada’s north. This component of the project supports the social activity of surrounding public spaces, including a splash pad and skate rink, a skateboard park, and a children’s boat pond that is located at the base of Red River Road and overlaps public portions of the park. The facilities include changing spaces, a warm-up room, rest area and washrooms. In the winter, the centre island and outdoor fireplace provide a warming area for skaters to rest and take refuge in the space in between activities. The Water Garden is also a destination for children and families in the summer months, where the fountain at the centre of the island provides display patterns and lights up at night. The program inside the facility allows the park to operate year-round, bringing vibrancy to the area through spaces that support all ages, and ultimately demonstrating social prosperity within the project. “For children it’s a place to jump, splash and laugh, to learn, create, and slop ice cream on their chins. For adults, it’s where we can discover cultures that aren’t our own, can converse with someone older, or younger, someone from outside our neighbourhood, our city, our tax bracket.”
