Esplanade Tranquille pavilion - Montreal

I had the opportunity to visit the Esplanade Tranquille pavilion in downtown Montreal. As an architect, I went there primarily because I was curious to see this new landmark of the Quartier des Spectacles; just imagine, an outdoor ice rink in downtown Montreal! But what surprised me most was the venue’s popularity. On a very cold winter day, the place was packed… Was it the chance to enjoy an activity with family or friends, to laugh and have fun, to warm up and grab a bite to eat? No, because all of that is possible at any park pavilion. I felt a sense of well-being there that goes beyond these aspects. The impressive windows offering a bird’s-eye view of the nearby rink, the feeling of being right in the thick of the action inside, the abundant light despite the gray winter sky, the warmth of the wood-paneled ceiling, the cheerful glow of the fireplace, the comforting aroma of coffee, the soothing greenery of the plants, not to mention the comfort of the many armchairs that invite you to linger… Both inside and out, you feel invited, welcomed, comfortable, and safe. You are surprised, and you’d like to come back. The scale, volume, and materials are carefully considered to achieve this. It evokes emotion, sensations, and a sense of well-being. The feeling of “being at a cabin” right in the heart of downtown Montreal! A memorable experience you wouldn’t necessarily expect to find there….
