In the summertime, walking through Prince’s Island Park in the late afternoon established a sense of connectivity to the city around me. Families, bicyclists, couples, and friends activated the space with all types of activities, and I enjoyed people watching and observing the commotion all around me. Even after walking for a few minutes in the park, I came across numerous dog walkers, bicyclists zooming past, and families sitting nearby. My favourite spot to sit and enjoy the views is next to the Bow River on the raised platform area or nearby ledges. From there, I could observe the water rushing past, a few buskers performing dances and playing instruments to onlookers. In the wintertime, the park transforms into a quiet area for appreciating the snowfall and the frozen river. One night when I visited the park with friends, we slid, danced, and skidded across the Bow River, and even without skates, we still laughed and enjoyed the experience immensely. What I remember most was the feeling of connection the park creates. It offers a calmer experience of downtown, while still being closely connected to it, and the quality of the space exists from the balance between bustling urban movement and moments of stillness.
