Peace Bridge

"The Peace Bridge in Calgary stands out to me as one of the clearest examples of public infrastructure that has become part of the city’s identity. When it was first introduced, there was a lot of resistance, which often happens when a city is changing. People resist change at the beginning. But over time, that changes too. Now it is one of the most recognizable and widely photographed bridges, and it has become an important part of how pedestrians and cyclists move through the city. To me, that says a great deal about public value. It is not only functional infrastructure, but also a civic landmark that people have come to accept and identify with. Having seen Calgary over many years, I can say there has been a huge difference in the city over time, even if change does not happen as fast as people want. Projects like this show that planning and design can have a lasting impact, even when they are not fully appreciated at first." (Adapted from interview material.
