The Spirit Garden is a strong example of enlivening the local heritage of the City of Thunder Bay and Aboriginal tradition. Katherine Dugmore, an urban planner and landscape architect, led Prince Arthur’s landing as the City’s project manager. Through the book, The City and the Garden Prince Arthur’s Landing Thunder Bay, the authors pay homage to her broader vision for the project, understanding the history of the site, and Indigenous culture, stories, and fortitude. Most importantly, the Spirit Garden is a landmark that expresses the City’s origin story and provides a gateway to Lake Superior. Through the main intentions of the Spirit Garden, Brook McIlroy Architects provided spaces that use strategic architectural and sustainable building strategies, as seen in the Celebration Circle, to promote material culture and social prosperity.
